DANGEROUS GOODS CODES

The transportation of dangerous and sea-polluting substances by ships transporting by sea is regulated by the International Convention for the Safety of the Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Convention for the Prevention of pollution from Ships (MARPOL). In the relevant sections of SOLAS and MARPOL, the necessary regulations of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code (International Maritime Dangerous Goods Regulation) have been explained in detail and they have adopted the law regarding the transportation of these substances by sea. As of January 1, 2004, the IMDG Code became mandatory. Classification and risk definitions of dangerous goods for all transport types (sea, air, train, land and inland waterways) are also made by the UNITED NATIONS Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UN).
CLASS 1 EXPLOSIVES (EXPLOSIVES) They should be stacked on the ship away from the personnel area and the ship's hull, just below the hatch covers. Substances included in this class: Black Powder, Cartridge, Smoke Grenade, Ammo, Dynamite etc.

CLASS 2 GASES SINIF 2.1 FLAMMABLE GAS : It should be stowed away from any heat source and personnel area. Substances included in this class: Acetylene, Ethane, Ethylene, Methane, Hydrogen, Lighter Gas etc.

SINIF 2.2 ZEHİRLİ GAZLAR (TOXIC GAS) : It should be stowed away from any heat sources, personnel area and food items. Substances included in this class: Ammonia, Fluorine, Prussic Acid, Chlorite, Carbon monoxide etc.

CLASS 2.3 NON-FLAMMABLE COMPRESSED GAS : It should be stored in cool, well-ventilated areas on deck or below deck. Tubes filled with these gases expand when heated, which can cause explosions and are very dangerous. Substances included in this class: Argon, Helium, Carbon Dioxide, Air Gas, Oxygen etc.

SINIF 3 FLAMMABLE LIQUID Flammable liquids are divided into 3 groups according to the burning point of the vaporized gas when they are heated.CLASS 3.1 GASOLINE: Its flash point is lower than 18O C. It should always be stowed on the deck. CLASS 3.2 FUEL : Its flash point is between 18OC and 23OC. It should be stowed above or below deck. CLASS 3.3 FUEL : Its flash point is between 23 OC and 61 OC. It should be stowed under deck.

CLASS 4 GASES CLASS 4.1 FLAMMABLE SOLID : They should be stowed on deck or below deck. They should be kept away from living quarters. Substances included in this class: Aluminum Powder, Celluloid, Naphthalene, Red Phosphorus, Films, Naphtha Oil, Dry Fibers etc.

CLASS 4.2 SPONTENOUSLY COMBUSTIBLEIt should be stacked in very well ventilated areas, and the stacks should be created in a way that ensures air circulation. Substances included in this class: Copra, Fish Meal, Dry Grass, Charcoal etc.

CLASS 4.3 DANGEROUS WHEN WET : Solids that burn when in contact with water or when wet. It should be stored in well-ventilated dry places and contact with water should be absolutely avoided. Substances included in this class: Alkaline alloys, Barium, Carbide, Ferro Silicon, Natrium, Magnesium etc.

CLASS 5 OXIDIZİNG SUBSTANCES CLASS 5.1 OXIDIZING AGENT Substances in this class create an environment that facilitates combustion by releasing oxygen. Because of these features, they should not be stacked near flammable materials. Substances included in this class: Nitrate, Fertilizer, Ammonium Sulphate, Barium Chlorate etc.

CLASS 5.2 ORGANIC PEROXIDE Substances in this class can be flammable as well as explosive. It should be placed in dry and cool places, covered on the deck. Substances included in this class: All peroxides are included in this class.

CLASS 6 TOXIC CLASS 6.1 TOXIC : Toxic substances can enter the human body orally and kill people. Therefore, they should be stowed away from food, beverages, living quarters, and moisture-producing substances such as tobacco. Substances included in this class: Arsenic, Aniline, Barium Oxide, Phenol, Nicotine, Lead, Cyanide, Mercury products etc.

CLASS 6.2 INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCE : These substances cause diseases because they contain microbes. They should be stowed away from food, drink and living quarters. In dangerous situations, the nearest health authority should be notified. Substances included in this class: Bone, Bone Fat, Compressed Meat Waste, Animal Skins, Blood Powder, etc.

CLASS 7 RADIOACTIVE These substances are transported in special containers. Containers must be absolutely undamaged. They should preferably be stowed on deck, away from personnel quarters, foodstuffs, undeveloped films, drugs and chemicals. They are divided into 3 groups in terms of their activity level.
